Theatre “Ugala” was founded on 1920 and is one of Estonian’s oldest professional drama theatres. It became professional in the year 1926, when notwithstanding the poor conditions there were drama, comedy and operettas were staged. On 1950–60s theatre company achieved high artistic level on expressing poetic realism. On 1980s Jaan Tooming brought with him a metaphoric directing style. In 1981 the new, spacious and modern theatre house was built.
